The New Role for Drones

Drones can see, hear, and smell. They can sense vibrations, measure distances, and detect dangerous gases and harmful radiation.
They are mobile, can cover large areas, and explore hard-to-reach as well as dangerous locations.
The prerequisite is that the drones can communicate with each other via networks and have GPS, which allows them to utilize AI assistance.
If these capabilities can be successfully integrated into a real drone swarm, drones can perform autonomous tasks quickly, thoroughly, and cost-effectively.
This Homepage Cybernetics tomorrow aims to describe the necessary transformation process.

The development of sensors, networks, and processing technologies for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has made rapid progress.
Drones that used to be remotely controlled by a pilot within line of sight were followed by First Person View Drones (FPV-UAVs), which show the pilot the camera footage as if the Pilot were sitting in the cockpit.
This is leading to research into multi-UAV and cooperative UAV systems, in which a single pilot can control multiple UAVs simultaneously.
Drone swarms, in which the swarm assumes swarm control largely autonomously, do not yet exist.
A drone swarm requires an internal command structure, which can only emerge through ongoing self-organization.
Shrouded in secrecy, no convincing solutions have yet been made public as to how drones can autonomously establish an internal command structure to distribute the diverse tasks among the individual drones.

The Use of Drones

Drones have gained significant traction across various industries due to their versatility and efficiency. The following sections outline the diverse applications of drone technology, highlighting their impact on different sectors.

Delivery Services

  • Medical Supply Delivery: Drones are employed to transport medical supplies, including vaccines, blood, and other critical materials, especially in remote or hard-to-reach areas.
  • Package Delivery: Companies are testing drone delivery for packages, aiming to reduce delivery times and costs. This application is particularly relevant for e-commerce businesses.
  • Food Delivery: Some restaurants and food delivery services are experimenting with drones to deliver meals directly to customers, enhancing convenience.

Environmental Monitoring

Drones play a crucial role in environmental conservation and monitoring.

  • Wildlife Tracking: Drones are utilized to track wildlife populations and monitor their habitats, aiding in conservation efforts.
  • Pollution Assessment: Environmental agencies employ drones to assess pollution levels in air and water, providing valuable data for regulatory compliance.

Agricultural Uses

The agricultural sector has embraced drone technology to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Agriculture surveillance range from mapping, surveying, and monitoring.

  • Crop Monitoring: Drones are used to monitor crop health through aerial imagery, allowing farmers to identify issues such as pest infestations or nutrient deficiencies.
  • Precision Agriculture: By utilizing drones for precision agriculture, farmers can apply seeds, fertilizers and pesticides more accurately, reducing environmental impact, which leads to efficient use of sparse resources and maximum production.

Infrastructure Inspection

Drones are increasingly being deployed for the inspection and maintenance of infrastructure.

  • Railway, Bridge and Building Inspections: Drones can safely inspect hard-to-reach areas of bridges and buildings, providing detailed imagery and data without the need for scaffolding or ladders.
  • Monitoring of nuclear power plants and power lines: Energy companies use drones for inspections to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
  • Monitoring solar and wind farms, factory premises, government buildings and property surveillance. Drones come in handy when remote buildings and/or larger infrastructures need to be monitored. Cameras in the sky provide a quick overview.

Public Safety and Security

The use of drones in sector of public safety will expand significantly.
In the future, there will be a new era of better-functioning drone swarms.

  • Combat crime: Drones can be used in conjunction with surveillance cameras to combat criminal gangs. They can monitor public spaces and public order, track offenders, and arrest them in cooperation with the police.
  • Monitoring and combat drug smuggling.
  • Disaster Management: During natural disasters such as earthquakes, forest and wildfires, floods, avalanches, and maritime emergencies, as well as man-made disasters, drones can assess damage and provide situational awareness to emergency responders.
Moreover, drones are also deployed in search and rescue missions, providing real-time aerial views that assist to locate missing persons.
  • Mapping of major construction sites such as airports, power lines and highways.
  • Drone defense in security-relevant areas such as airports and industrial facilities.

Traffic surveillance

While cars can report congestion, a drone captures the bigger picture; a drone with a camera can be very helpful in getting an optical overview of accident sites. See:

Unarmed Military surveillance and reconnaissance

  • · Unarmed long-range drones: In the event of war, they can penetrate hundreds of kilometers into enemy territory and scout civilian targets and infrastructure. They should therefore be classified as Killer Drones, as they scout targets for autonomous long-range Killer Drones.
  • · Small UAV drones: Successful frontline defense depends primarily on the quality and number of available FPV drones capable of detecting any enemy movement in the frontline area and immediately initiating defensive measures. Autonomous drone swarms will play a major role in this regard. Future developments will enable these swarms to self-organize in response to enemy activity at the front and propose defensive plans. Drone swarms provide real-time targeting data for military defense; it is then up to the frontline commander to approve or modify the proposed defensive plans.

Armed Military missions

  • · Armed long-range killer drones can penetrate hundreds of kilometers into enemy territory, destroy infrastructure, and kill civilians.
They are attack drones which must be outlawed like all killer robots. See: Stigmatization of Killer Robots
  • · Small UAV semi-autonomous combat drones: A successful defense on the front line depends on the number of available armed FPV combat drones. These can reinforce future drone swarms. Future developments will enable drone swarms to self-organize in response to enemy activity in the frontline area, propose defense plans, and deploy semi-autonomous combat drones. It then falls to the frontline commander to approve or modify these defense plans. Above all, however, the commander decides on the actions to be taken by the semi-autonomous combat drones.

Why it is important to distinguish between offensive and defensive drones

In Utopia herrscht Frieden.
